‘UBER LITE’ LAUNCHES IN KENYA AND SOUTH AFRICA. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS
Global car-hailing service provider Uber has launched another app dubbed Uber Lite. The app has been designed with a new interface for booking rides in areas with poor internet connection on basic smartphones.
The app is an abridged version of the regular Uber app as it was designed for constraint Uber users with basic smartphones would experience. With Uber Lite little memory is required to install the app as it requires around 5 Mb to be installed, unlike the regular Uber app that takes 45 MB of device storage.
Alon Lits, General Manager for Uber Sub-Saharan Africa explains, “Every day, hundreds of thousands of South Africans rely on Uber for mobility and work, and we understand that a one-size-fits-all app doesn’t work for the diversity of network conditions, devices, and rider needs across the country.
After extensive research with our riders, it was obvious we couldn’t just make a smaller copy of Uber. We needed to re-imagine the experience for South Africa and key markets around the world. The result is Uber Lite. A completely redesigned app that is light, simple, and works on any Android device and on any network.
Outside this move to enable Uber to reach more clients in Kenya and South Africa, Uber has not stopped increasing its range of products in Kenya and other parts of Africa. The ride-hailing service provider recently launched Uber Assist, a specialized cab service that caters for riders with special access needs in Kenya.
Uber assist comes after several other Uber products available in Kenya like Uber tuk-tuk, Uber Chap Chap, Uber Boda, Uber X, Uber Select, and Uber Poa.
However, the new Uber Lite app comes with certain distinct features differing it from the traditional Uber app.
Apart from varying interface of Uber Lite and the regular Uber app, Uber Lite makes picking your destination as easy as a tap of a button. Additionally, the app stores the city’s top places such that even when you are offline, no network is needed for them to appear.
And the more you use Uber Lite, the smarter the app gets. It learns where you go most often, and surfaces those options first. This feature is particularly convenient for Users with phones that have smaller screens.
