Marks and Spencer names North Wales store closure date

February 5, 2018

Marks and Spencer has announced the closure date for one of its Llandudno stores.

The retail giant revealed in November it wanted to shake up its estate in the town.

M&S said it would first close its satellite store on Mostyn Street and relocate staff and departments to the main shop a few doors up the road.

It has now revealed that the closure will happen on Saturday February 10.

Bosses added that they remain committed to then relocating the whole operation to Parc Llandudno and a public consultation will take place later this year.

That decision has come under fire in the town with concerns about the massive retail holes left in the town centre and added traffic pressure at the retails parks.

Craig Baldock, M&S Head of Region for North Wales, said: “Our menswear and kidswear store on Mostyn Street will close on the 10 February and all colleagues will move to the main store .

"We remain committed to relocating to Parc Llandudno to offer our customers a bigger and better store and public consultation will take place in the coming months."

Since the firm made the shock announcement they have come under fierce attack, both by local shoppers and Llandudno landowner Mostyn Estates, which owns the freehold on Parc Llandudno.

It is also understood the retail park has covenants in place that prevents the opening of a food store at the site.

This comes as the retailer announces plans to shut stores in the UK.

Over 450 jobs are at risk under plans to close eight stores as part of a restructuring programme.

The high street giant is proposing to shut stores in Andover, Basildon, Bridlington, Denton, Falmouth, Fareham, Keighley and Stockport, with 468 staff entering consultation.

Another six stores will close by the end of April in Birkenhead, Bournemouth, Durham, Fforestfach, Putney and Redditch, but all colleagues at those outlets will be redeployed to nearby stores.
